Nursing is a Fine Art

Picture
Florence Nightingale envisioned nursing as one of the fine arts. She used this vision to make the point that nursing requires as exclusive a devotion as a painter’s or sculptor’s work. Today, significant changes confront our nation’s health care system. As we prepare to face these challenges, we must keep this vision alive by encouraging students of the highest caliber to enter this demanding field and support them throughout their professional careers of life long learning.

In Pennsylvania, emerging integrated delivery systems serve the needs of more than 12 million people. In recent years, health care providers have worked to deliver quality care in an increasingly complex environment that demands cost efficiency and management of care throughout the entire life cycle. Technology is advancing quickly and our aging population is placing unprecedented demands on the system. In addition, national health care costs are consuming over 17% of the GNP. Moving to a capitated system of payment enhances incentives to promote health and wellness. These changes present a whole new world of opportunities for professional nurses.

Nightingale Awards of Pennsylvania has presented several hundred thousand dollars in scholarship monies to Pennsylvanians pursuing nursing education, which will prepare them to become practical nurses, registered nurses or advance practice clinical nurses. To be eligible, an applicant must be a Pennsylvania resident and agree to work as a nurse in the state following licensure.

As the responsibilities of nurses continue to grow in the future, Nightingale Awards of Pennsylvania will work in partnership to contribute to the success and recognition that demonstrates pride and ownership in the profession of nursing. Our efforts are focused on ensuring that future nurses will receive the support and recognition necessary to continue to provide for the healthcare needs of Pennsylvania.
